Android retro handhelds: pick the chip, then the screen, then check the price
An Android retro handheld is a phone chip inside a game-controller body. The chip decides which consoles it can play, the shape of the screen decides how those games look, and the crossed-out price on the listing usually tells you nothing. Three questions, in order.
Step 1: Do you need Android at all?
If everything you want to play came out before about 2000 — Game Boy, NES, SNES, Genesis, the first PlayStation — a small Linux handheld does the job for about a third of the price. Retro Dodo's August 2026 round-up puts the Anbernic RG35XX Plus at $63.99 for everything up to Dreamcast, DS and PS1, with a little PSP, and the Miyoo Mini at $49.99. Linux handhelds start straight into a game menu; Android ones take longer to set up.
Android earns its price from the PlayStation 2 and GameCube generation upward. It also runs ordinary Android games and apps, which a Linux handheld cannot.
PS1 and older → Linux, about $50–$80

PS2, GameCube and up → Android, about $150 and up
Then the chip matters more than anything else on the spec sheet — Step 2.
Step 2: The chip sets the ceiling
Every Android handheld is built around a phone processor, and that processor is the ceiling on what it can emulate. Five tiers cover almost every model on sale in 2026.

“Some titles” means exactly that. A spec sheet lists systems, not games: look up the games you care about for the chip before you pay for it.
Speed is not the whole story
Two handhelds of similar speed can emulate differently because of the graphics half of the chip. Time Extension's review of the Dimensity 8300-based RG557 (June 2025) traced its PS2 failures to how well emulators supported its Mali graphics, not to raw speed; later firmware updates are reported to have helped. The RG477M, on the same chip, reviewed well at Retro Handhelds three months later, which found it capable of emulating systems up to the Nintendo Switch.
Step 3: The screen shape
Most consoles before the Wii drew a 4:3 picture: NES, SNES, Genesis, PlayStation, N64, PS2 and GameCube. The Game Boy Advance is 3:2, the Game Boy 10:9, and the PSP and Switch are 16:9 (Joey's Retro Handhelds keeps the full chart).
4:3 — for the classics
Pre-2006 games fill the whole panel. Anbernic RG406H (4-inch, 960×720) and RG477M (4.7-inch, 1280×960, 120 Hz).
16:9 — for PSP, Switch and Android games
Classic games play with bars at the sides. Retroid Pocket 6 (5.5-inch AMOLED, 120 Hz), Anbernic RG557 (5.48-inch AMOLED).
Two screens — for DS and 3DS
AYN Thor: a 6-inch and a 3.92-inch OLED. Retro Handhelds' reviewer praised the screens and called the grip a dealbreaker.
Whichever you choose, do not stretch a 4:3 game to fill a 16:9 screen: a correctly proportioned picture with black bars looks better than a distorted full-screen one.
The numbers on the listing that do not mean what they say
“Was $541.17”
The AliExpress listing for the RG406H shows $167.76 against a crossed-out $541.17 — a 69% discount. Anbernic's own store lists the same handheld at $167.99, with a sale price of $149.99 when it is in stock (we checked on September 23, 2026). $167.76 is the regular price. The $541.17 is the seller's number, and so is the 69% worked out from it.
“Preloaded with 4,000+ games”
Some listings bundle a memory card full of games, and AliExpress sells “game SD cards” for these handhelds on their own. Nobody licensed those games. Nintendo's position is plain: “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” As Tom's Hardware reported the U.S. Copyright Office's view, a backup of a game you own is one you make yourself. Emulators themselves are legal. Buy the version without a game card — the handheld is the part worth paying for.
“12GB RAM”
Memory got expensive in 2026. Retroid stopped selling the 12GB Retroid Pocket 6 in March, when memory costs spiked, and brought it back in June with half the storage: $279 for 12GB and 128GB, against $244 for 8GB and 128GB.
Is this a good price? In 2026, prices are going up, not down
Android handhelds are built from phone parts, and 2026's memory shortage has pushed their prices up:
- Retroid Pocket 6 (8GB): $229 at launch in October 2025, $244 by June 2026.
- AYN Thor: $309 to $319 (base), $369 to $399 (Pro) and $449 to $489 (Max) on March 8, 2026. The Lite, on the older Snapdragon 865, stayed at $249.
- AYN Odin 3: $329 at launch, $369 from September 1, 2026 — its third increase of the year, blamed on chip, memory and storage costs.
So the price to hold a listing against is the maker's own current price — not a crossed-out “was” price, and not last year's deal. Our lines for the models sold with US shipping:

Retroid and AYN sell from their own websites. A search of AliExpress on September 23, 2026 found only cases for them, plus one reseller asking $459.88 for a Thor, so we do not link to either. Anbernic's own US stores on AliExpress ship from inside the US, and that is where our links go.
Where we would start
- Only the classics: a Linux handheld around $65. For PS1 and older, nothing on Android is worth the extra $100.
- PS2 and GameCube on a budget: the Anbernic RG406H at its regular $167.99 or less — a 4:3 screen, Hall-effect sticks and a 5,000 mAh battery. Pocket Retro Gaming called it one of the best value handhelds of 2025.
- A bigger 4:3 screen and more headroom: the Anbernic RG477M, but wait for a promotion. At $286 it is at list price, and Retro Handhelds notes its weight (357 g) and a fan that runs often.
- 16:9 for PSP and Switch-era games: the Retroid Pocket 6, $244 from Retroid. It is not sold through the stores we link to.
- Two screens for DS and 3DS: the AYN Thor — $249 for the Snapdragon 865 Lite, $319 and up with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 — if the grip suits you.
What these prices mean
Every price here is one we recorded ourselves, with the date:
- Anbernic RG406H, Anbernic's US-stock listing on AliExpress: $167.76 on all five checks, September 19–23, 2026. A second RG406H listing from Anbernic's US store: $178.45 over the same days.
- Anbernic RG477M, Anbernic Stateside Store: $286.11 on September 23, 2026, our first check. Anbernic's Official and Direct stores asked $300.24 and $300.19 the same day.
- Anbernic RG406V: $174.70 (Anbernic US Local Store) and $179.99 (Anbernic Official Store), September 23.
- Linux: Anbernic RG35XX H $68.31 (September 20–23) and RG28XX $51.15 (September 22–23).
AliExpress also shows lower prices to new accounts and with coupons. Those change by the day, so we record the price the listing shows for delivery to the US. Anbernic's promotions are where the real drops come from: in March 2026 a store code plus a PayPal discount took the RG557 to $173.89 and the RG477M to $183.13. That is the kind of drop our Deal Meter waits for.
