Tactical backpacks under $50 compared

A small daypack with a slotted front panel and a bottle at its side, a liter scale, and a big pack with rows of sewn webbing
Illustration: Real Deal Meter

Three tactical backpacks from one AliExpress store, Adventure Club, all under $40: one of 25 liters and two of 45. They look alike — a flag patch, a grid of slots or webbing across the front, bottle pockets on two of them — so the choice is mostly size, and the grid on the front decides less than it seems to. Fit decides more than either.

Our pick: 25L Tactical Molle Backpack with Dual Cup Holders. For everyday carrying, the gym and day hikes, the 25 L. It sits in the 21 to 35 liter range REI calls the sweet spot for most hiking and travel daypacks, and it has a bottle pocket on each side. Buy a 45 if you carry layers, food and water for a long day, or pack for a weekend: REI puts 36 to 40 liters at day trips that need more clothing and gear, and 30 to 50 liters at one to three nights. Between the two 45s, the one with the double cup holder has the bottle pockets and, by its photo, a laser-cut front panel; the MOLLE one has, by its photo, rows of sewn webbing, the kind Midwest Armor calls more forgiving of hard use. Whichever you buy, it has to fit your torso, and a hip belt starts to matter once the load passes about 15 pounds.

Liters first: what 25 and 45 hold

A pack’s size is its volume in liters, and REI’s guide to daypacks gives the ranges that matter here. Daypacks run from about 5 to 40 liters; 10 to 20 will do for walks of under two hours; 21 to 35 is the sweet spot for most hiking and travel daypacks; 36 to 40 suits trips that need more clothing and gear; and packs of 50 liters are more common for overnights 1.

So the 25 L is a daypack in the full sense — a jacket, lunch and water for a day. The two 45s sit past the daypack range, inside the 30 to 50 liters REI’s guide to backpacks gives for a weekend of one to three nights 2: a long day with layers, or a few nights out. One of them is sold for three-day trips, which that range covers.

MOLLE is a grid for pouches, sewn or cut

MOLLE — Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment — is the military system these packs borrow, and the grid on the front is its attachment part, PALS, the Pouch Attachment Ladder System: strips spaced an inch apart and sewn down at 1.5-inch intervals, for pouches to be woven onto 1. It is only useful if you add pouches, which are sold separately.

Two of these packs cut the grid as slots into a panel instead of sewing on webbing. Midwest Armor, which sells both kinds, describes laser-cut panels as lighter and flatter than stitched webbing and designed to take the same pouches; it also says stitched webbing is more forgiving of extreme abuse over a long life, and that cut slots can wear at the edges under hard use 2. For a gym bag or a day pack the difference is small; for a pack you will drag through brush and load with pouches, the 45 L MOLLE pack has, by its photo, the kind of webbing Midwest Armor calls more forgiving of hard use.

Fit decides more than the front panel

REI names torso length — not your height — and hip size as the most important fit factors. If there is a gap at the top of your shoulders, the pack is too long for your torso; if the straps wrap well down your back before they meet the pack, it is too short. A hip belt starts to matter once the pack weighs more than about 15 pounds, because it moves some of the weight onto your hips, and a sternum strap across the chest steadies the load 1.

If you buy one of the 45s for long days, look for a padded hip belt in its photos and try it on loaded as soon as it arrives.

What these prices mean

Each price here is the one we last checked on that product’s own page, and each page says the date. All three are AliExpress listings from the same store, Adventure Club: AliExpress quotes new accounts a lower “Welcome deal” price and runs store coupons on top, so you may be shown less than we list, and the struck-through figures are the seller’s own, which we have not seen charged. We found no store of the seller’s own to compare.

Prices are what we last checked on each product's own page — follow a link for the current price and the date it was verified. Every outbound link here is an affiliate link; see Disclosure.
