Portable and home cinema projectors compared

Nine projectors, from $74 to $2,799, and they are not nine steps up one ladder. Three run on a battery and go where you carry them; the rest need a plug, from a small one with flip-up speakers to two laser home cinemas. Brightness is the number every one of them leads with and the one that means least as printed, so this page explains how to read it, then which projector suits which room.

Our pick: Magcubic X7 1080p Android Projector. For a first projector in a room you can make dark, the Magcubic X7. For about $157 it projects a native 1080p picture with autofocus and automatic keystone, runs Android 14, and sits on a stand that turns to any wall. Its 1000 ANSI lumens is Magcubic’s own figure and nobody we can point to has measured it, so do not count on it with the lights on. For that — a living room in the evening, a screen past 100 inches — the step up is Nebula’s Cosmos 4K SE at 1,800 ANSI lumens. And for a backyard, the Mars 3 runs about five hours on its battery.

Battery or wall plug decides the shortlist

Three of these run on a battery: the Capsule 3 for about 2.5 hours in eco mode 1, the Capsule 3 Laser for about 2.5 hours of video 2, and the Mars 3 for about five hours in eco mode 3. If the projector is going to a campsite, a bedroom ceiling or a friend’s house, start with those three.

The P1i is small enough to carry but has no battery; Soundcore suggests running it from a portable power station 4. The Cosmos 4K SE needs an external power supply 5, and the X1 runs on mains power 6. They are for a room with an outlet, and the three brightest projectors here are all on that side.

A lumen figure is only as good as how it was measured

ANSI lumens are the average of nine readings taken across an all-white image. Other methods give bigger numbers: a reading at the centre spot alone almost always comes out higher, and “LED lumens” and similar figures are not measured the same way at all 1. A figure without “ANSI” in front of it is not one you can compare.

Even an ANSI figure depends on the picture mode. ProjectorCentral notes that a projector’s brightest mode usually gives up accurate colour to get there 1. Soundcore’s X1S page shows it in one line: up to 6,000 ANSI lumens in Conference Mode, 3,000 in its default cinema mode 2. For films, the second number is the one to compare.

And look at who did the measuring. Soundcore says the P1i’s 380 ANSI lumens is TÜV-certified 3; Magcubic’s 1000 ANSI for the X7 is its own rating 4.

  1. Lumens Explained ProjectorCentral — ANSI lumens: the average of nine points on a 100% white image; center-spot lumens 'almost always' read higher; 'LED lumens' and other methods differ; the brightest mode 'throws out any attempt at producing accurate color'
  2. Nebula X1S 4K Projector soundcore (Anker) — the maker's page: 'up to 6,000 ANSI lumens (in Conference Mode)', 3,000 in the default Nebula Master Mode; near-100% BT.2020 in Vivid Mode; 40 W built-in speakers; liquid cooling like the X1
  3. Nebula P1i soundcore (Anker) — the maker's page: 380 ANSI lumens, TUV-certified; 1080p; Google TV; two flippable 10 W speakers; no built-in battery - a power station is suggested
  4. Projector X7 Magcubic — the maker's page: 1000 ANSI; '1080P Native & 8K Support' - native 1080p, 8K files decoded; Android 14; Allwinner H726; autofocus and automatic keystone

4K, 8K and the picture you actually get

“8K support” on the Magcubic X7 means it can play an 8K file; the image it projects is native 1080p 1. The Capsule 3, the Capsule 3 Laser, the Mars 3 and the P1i are 1080p too 2 3 4 5. Soundcore gives the X1 as 3840 × 2160 6; for the Cosmos 4K SE its page says “4K UHD” without saying how the picture gets there 7.

What these prices mean

Each price here is the one we last checked on that product’s own page, and each page says the date. The seven Nebula prices are Soundcore’s own, read every day from the product feed Soundcore gives its affiliates; Soundcore has kept each of them below its list price since we started reading that feed on September 23, 2026, and we have not seen any of the seven charged at list.

The two Magcubics are AliExpress listings. AliExpress quotes new accounts a lower “Welcome deal” price and runs store coupons on top, so you may be shown less than we list; the struck-through figures there are the sellers’ own and we have not verified them.
