Car parts and tools under $250 compared

The back of a coupe with a lip spoiler on its trunk and tail lamps with chevron turn signals, and a scissor jack with a motor and a remote
Illustration: Real Deal Meter

Two of these three fit one car each: a gloss-black trunk spoiler listed for BMW's 2007–2013 E92 M3 two-door, and LED tail lamps listed for the 2014–2020 Lexus IS. The third, an electric scissor jack, is not tied to a model. So the first question is what you drive.

Our pick: SucceBuy 5-Ton Electric Car Jack with Remote. For most readers our pick is the SucceBuy jack, the only one of the three that can work on any car. Buy it as a tire-changing aid, not as a way to hold a car up: its 5T rating is the seller's claim, the title gives no unit, height or standard, and no jack should hold a car with anyone under it. If you own one of the two named cars, the part made for it is worth a look once the seller confirms your exact model year and, for the tail lamps, what they are certified to.

The only one of the three not tied to a model. The seller's title rates it 5T without saying which ton or at what height, and a jack should only lift: the car must be supported by something else before anyone goes underneath.

Start with the car in your driveway

The spoiler's seller title names the 2007–2013 BMW E92 M3 two-door. BMW built that generation of the 3 Series from 2005 to 2013 as a sedan, coupe, convertible and Touring, with the M3 offered as a sedan, coupe and convertible, and says that for the first time the body styles followed their own design paths 1. Owners of the sedan, the convertible or a non-M coupe should confirm fit with the seller first.

The tail lamps are listed for the 2014–2020 Lexus IS, naming the IS 250, IS 350, IS 200t and IS 300. Even inside that span the factory lamps changed: Lexus says the 2017 restyle brought more pronounced L-shaped LED light guides, now triple layered within the taillight housing 2, and the 2021 IS got an L-shaped light bar that spans the rear of the car 3. Confirm fit for your exact model year with the seller.

The jack is not tied to a model, but it still has a fit rule. Harbor Freight's scissor-jack manual says to lift only on areas of the vehicle specified by the vehicle manufacturer, and to follow the tire-changing procedure in the vehicle maker's owner's manual 4.

  3. 2021 LEXUS IS: Agility and Athleticism Expand Pure Driving Performance Lexus USA Newsroom — Dated June 15, 2020 (2021 IS reveal): describes an 'L-shaped blade-style lightbar that spans across the rear of the vehicle' and an 'extended, lowered' rear deck as part of the car's new exterior styling.

What "5T" on the jack does and does not tell you

The seller title says 5T and stops there. Read as metric tonnes, that is 5,000 kg, about 11,000 lb; read as US short tons of 2,000 lb, it is 10,000 lb 1. Neither says what the jack carries at the height you use it. Harbor Freight's manual for one of its own scissor jacks rates it at 3,000 lb only when extended 14 inches or more and at 900 lb when extended 6 inches, and tells owners not to exceed rated capacities at specified heights 2. The SucceBuy title gives no such table; ask the seller for one.

To size a jack against your car, check the certification label on the driver's door pillar or door edge: it lists the gross vehicle weight rating and a gross axle weight rating for each axle, in pounds 3. OSHA's workplace rule says the operator must make sure a jack's rating is sufficient to lift and sustain the load 4.

No rating makes a car safe to get under. The same OSHA rule says a raised load must be cribbed, blocked or otherwise secured at once 4, and Harbor Freight's manual says not to get beneath the vehicle when it is supported by the jack 2.

  1. NIST Guide to the SI, Appendix B.8: Factors for Units Listed Alphabetically National Institute of Standards and Technology — Page modified 2025-08-18. 'tonne (called "metric ton" in U.S.) (t)' to kilogram: 1.0 E+03; 'ton, short (2000 lb)' to kilogram: 9.071 847 E+02; 'pound (avoirdupois) (lb)' to kilogram: 4.535 924 E-01. So 5 tonnes = 5,000 kg, about 11,023 lb; 5 short tons = 10,000 lb.

(g)(3): 'Gross Vehicle Weight Rating' or 'GVWR' followed by the value in pounds. (g)(4): 'Gross Axle Weight Rating' or 'GAWR' followed by the value in pounds, 'for each axle'.
  4. 29 CFR 1910.244, Other portable tools and equipment Occupational Safety and Health Administration — (a)(1)(i): 'The operator shall make sure that the jack used has a rating sufficient to lift and sustain the load.' (a)(2)(iii): 'After the load has been raised, it shall be cribbed, blocked, or otherwise secured at once.'

What separates a good one from a bad one

A jack worth trusting says what it was built to. Harbor Freight's page for its scissor jack says it complies with ASME PASE 1, ASME's safety standard covering the design, marking and operation of automotive jacks and stands 2. Its manual adds rules: hard, level ground, parking brake on, wheels chocked, emergency tire changes or tire chains only 3. If the SucceBuy seller can't supply a standard and a manual, you are buying on the title's word.

Tail lamps carry legal weight. FMVSS No. 108 says a replacement lamp must be designed to meet every requirement for each function, include all functions of the lamp it replaces and, if sold for particular models, not take the vehicle out of compliance 4. On a tail lamp the DOT mark is optional and, where present, certifies conformance 4; NHTSA does not approve equipment, and makers self-certify 5. On sequential blinkers, NHTSA told one maker in 1987 that multiple turn signal lamps may flash in sequence toward the turn 6, and another in 2003 that a lamp lighting from the center outward would not comply, as it missed the minimum area requirement when the cycle began 7. Ask what the lamps are certified to, and check your state's rules.

  2. PASE - Safety Standard for Portable Automotive Service Equipment ASME — PASE-2024 scope: 'This Standard applies to the design, construction, marking, operation, maintenance, and owner or operation inspection' of portable automotive service equipment, including 'automotive hand jacks, automotive mechanical jacks, automotive stands'.

'Apply parking break [sic] and chock tires before using.' 'Use only for emergency tire changing or mounting tire chains.' Page 4 lists the rating by extended height.
  4. 49 CFR 571.108, Standard No. 108; Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment eCFR (Office of the Federal Register) — S6.7.1.1: each replacement lamp must '(a) Be designed to conform to meet all requirements specified in this standard for that type of lamp ... (in the case of a combination lamp, it must meet these requirements for each function); and (b) Include all of the functions of the lamp ... it is designed to replace or is capable of replacing (other than functions not required by this standard).' S6.7.1.2: a replacement 'designed or recommended for particular vehicle models must be designed so that it does not take the vehicle out of compliance with this standard'. S6.5.1.2: a lamp other than a headlamp 'may be marked with the symbol "DOT" which constitutes a certification that it conforms to the requirements of this standard.'
  5. 571.108 -- HDC Supplemental Turning Lamps -- HAAS -- 15-4155 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration — Interpretation letter dated 5/6/19: 'NHTSA does not provide approvals of motor vehicles or motor vehicle equipment'; 'manufacturers are required to self-certify that their products conform to all applicable safety standards.'
  6. Interpretation nht87-2.47: letter to Yue Loong Motor Engineering Center National Highway Traffic Safety Administration — Dated 07/13/87: 'The standard allows multiple turn signal lamps either to flash simultaneously, or sequentially in the direction of the turn.' Each lamp is individually subject to the flash-rate limits.
  7. Interpretation 00473.ztv: letter to Panor Corp. on the Maxxima M40130R lamp National Highway Traffic Safety Administration — Dated 5/22/03. The lamp's turn signal 'illuminated from the center outwards to the perimeter'; 'all light sources providing a turn signal must be illuminated simultaneously'; 'the minimum area requirement is not met at the time the first cycle begins'; 'Thus, the stop and turn signal function of the Maxxima lamp would not comply with Standard No. 108.'
