3D printers under $300 compared

Three printers, all under $300, and the choice between them is not really about price — it is about which kind of machine you want in the room. One of them is a resin printer, which is a different hobby with a different set of purchases attached to it. The other two are filament printers that differ mainly in how much of your first weekend they will take.

Our pick: Flashforge Adventurer 5M 3D Printer. It is the one most likely to print something on the evening it arrives. Auto-leveling and a direct-drive extruder out of the box are not headline features, but they are the two things whose absence turns a first printer into a calibration project. It is also enclosed-adjacent enough for PLA and PETG, which is what a first printer should be printing.

Resin or filament is the first decision, and price is not how to make it

The Photon Mono 4 is the cheapest machine on this page and it is the most expensive one to own. Resin prints at a level of detail filament cannot approach — miniatures, jewellery masters, anything where a layer line would ruin it. What comes with that is a process: every print comes out wet with uncured resin, gets washed in isopropyl alcohol, then cured under UV. You need gloves, you need ventilation, and you need somewhere the smell is acceptable.

Budget for a wash-and-cure station before you decide resin is the cheaper way in. Once you add it plus alcohol plus resin, the gap closes and then some. Choose resin because you want the detail, not because the printer costs less.

What actually separates a good first filament printer from a bad one

Not speed, and not build volume. Two things: whether it levels the bed itself, and whether the extruder is direct-drive.

Auto-leveling is the difference between a printer that works and a printer that is a project. Manual bed leveling on a cheap frame is the single most common reason a first printer ends up in a closet — not because it is hard, but because it has to be redone, and each redo is twenty minutes standing over the machine with a piece of paper.

Direct drive means the motor that pushes filament sits on the print head rather than at the far end of a tube. It handles flexible filament, it retracts more predictably, and it makes stringing easier to tune out. Both of these printers have both. That is why they are on this page.

600mm/s is a ceiling, and not the one you think

The Sovol's headline number is real in the sense that the motion system can move that fast with nothing attached to it. It is not the speed you will print at, and the reason is worth knowing before you pay for the number.

Two things cap a real print. The first is volumetric flow: how many cubic millimetres of plastic the hotend can melt per second. Your slicer divides that budget by layer height and line width, so the same printer that manages 100mm/s on thin layers drops to a third of that the moment you ask for thicker ones — the limit is the volume, not the distance 1. The second is the motion system itself. E3D, who make the hotends, put it plainly: on most standard profiles the motion system rather than the hotend is already the bottleneck, and a faster hotend alone changes nothing until the speed, acceleration and jerk limits move too 2.

So read a headline speed as evidence that the frame and motion hardware are modern. Do not read it as a print time.

The specification nobody prints: how many other people own one

When a printer misbehaves — and a first printer will — the thing that gets you unstuck is somebody having already had your exact problem and written it down. Creality and Bambu sell in volumes that guarantee this. Sovol does not.

That is not an argument against the SV06 ACE; it is a well-built machine and its owners like it. It is an argument for knowing what you are choosing. If you are the sort of person who enjoys working a problem, the smaller community costs you nothing. If you want the printer to be an appliance, weigh it.

What these prices mean

Each price here is the one I last checked on that product's own page, and each page says the date. AliExpress also quotes new accounts a lower "Welcome deal" price and runs store coupons that stack on top, so what you are shown may be less than what is listed here.
